Ashaya
Ashaya is a social enterprise that is on a mission to transform waste into valuable products while empowering waste pickers in India. Founded by Anish Malpani, Ashaya’s first product line, Without, features stylish and sustainable sunglasses made from multi-layered packaging waste, such as chocolate wrappers and chip packets. The brand is unique in that it not only creates eco-friendly products but also provides fair wages and safer working conditions for waste pickers who often work in hazardous environments.
Anish’s inspiration for Ashaya came during a walk past the Chembur landfill in Mumbai, where he saw piles of waste and debris stacked high. He knew he had to make a difference and began researching waste management practices in India. After months of research and brainstorming, he launched Ashaya to increase the value of waste through deep tech and fairly redistribute that value to stakeholders in the supply chain, especially waste pickers who are among the poorest in society.
Anish’s ten years of experience in finance, operations, data, and the social impact space in different parts of the world have enabled him to build a social enterprise that is scalable and sustainable. Ashaya’s unique business model has provided employment opportunities for waste pickers and raised awareness about the importance of waste management in India.
Today, Ashaya continues to expand its product line and reach more consumers. In addition to Without sunglasses, the brand plans to introduce other products made from recycled waste. Ashaya’s success is a testament to Anish’s vision and determination to create a world where waste is transformed into valuable products, and poverty has no place.
