From French Teacher to Food Entrepreneur: How Apeksha Jain Built The Gourmet Jar into a Premium Clean-Label Brand

India’s premium food industry has witnessed remarkable growth over the past decade, and few stories capture this transformation better than Apeksha Jain, Founder of The Gourmet Jar. What began as a passion for cooking during her stay in France has today evolved into one of India’s leading clean-label gourmet food brands, serving consumers across quick commerce, retail, e-commerce, and hospitality.

An Accidental Entrepreneur with a Passion for Food

Apeksha never planned to become an entrepreneur. Trained as a French teacher, she started a food blog while living in France, where she was inspired by artisanal jams made with fresh ingredients. After returning to India in 2012, she recreated a unique banana rum jam in her home kitchen. Positive feedback from friends and family soon turned her passion project into a home-based business that later became The Gourmet Jar.

Creating India’s Gourmet Food Category

When The Gourmet Jar was launched, the concept of gourmet, preservative-free products was still new in India. Instead of relying on advertising, Apeksha focused on food sampling at farmers’ markets and exhibitions, allowing customers to experience the products firsthand. Innovative flavors and clean ingredients quickly differentiated the brand from traditional packaged food companies.

Scaling Through Quality, Not Shortcuts

A defining moment came when The Oberoi Group selected The Gourmet Jar as its local jam supplier. Winning the prestigious contract validated the brand’s quality and pushed Apeksha to establish a professional manufacturing facility while maintaining artisanal standards.

Today, the company manufactures nearly 20 tons of products every month, operates with a team of around 45 people, and is available on leading quick commerce platforms, e-commerce marketplaces, premium retail stores, restaurants, and hotels across India.

Building a Sustainable Business

Unlike many startups chasing rapid expansion, Apeksha believes profitability and cash flow are the foundation of long-term success. She openly shared that focusing too little on financial discipline during the early years was one of her biggest entrepreneurial mistakes. Today, The Gourmet Jar prioritizes sustainable growth while remaining open to strategic investment from partners who share its long-term vision.

The Future of Clean-Label Food

With over 30 products spanning jams, pasta sauces, dressings, dips, and spreads, the company continues to innovate while staying true to its philosophy of using real ingredients without artificial preservatives. Apeksha believes India’s next major food opportunity lies in functional foods and gut health products as consumers become increasingly health-conscious.

For aspiring founders, her advice is simple: build strong systems, focus on numbers from day one, and believe in yourself despite the challenges.
