Chennai-based deeptech startup Vikra Ocean Tech has raised $1 million in a seed funding round led by Finvolve, with participation from India Accelerator. The funding marks a significant step forward for India’s growing deeptech ecosystem, particularly in the strategic field of ocean robotics and underwater technologies.
Founded in 2019, Vikra Ocean Tech is focused on building what it claims to be India’s first fully indigenous ocean robotics stack designed for underwater and surface-level marine operations. The startup aims to reduce the country’s dependence on imported underwater robotics systems by developing scalable and cost-effective solutions tailored specifically for Indian conditions.
Vikra Ocean Tech is developing a modular ecosystem that includes deep-water remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous surface vessels (ASVs), amphibious crawling robots, and AI-powered imaging and communication systems.
Its technologies are designed for applications across defence, hydrographic surveys, subsea inspections, offshore exploration, disaster response, and marine infrastructure management. By integrating these systems through a unified control platform, the startup is creating a comprehensive ocean robotics infrastructure that can support multiple industries.
In addition to robotic platforms, the company also develops in-house hardware solutions such as underwater cameras, advanced lighting systems, diver communication tools, and AI-enabled video enhancement technologies. One of its major technological achievements includes the development of a deep-ocean camera and lighting system capable of operating at depths of up to 2,000 metres.
The startup’s autonomous surface vessels are already being deployed in offshore marine exploration projects, showcasing its growing industry adoption.
The fresh capital will be used to scale product manufacturing, strengthen the startup’s sales pipeline across defence organisations and public sector undertakings (PSUs), and establish recurring revenue streams through annual maintenance contracts and service agreements.
Vikra Ocean Tech has already gained recognition within India’s defence and innovation ecosystem. The startup claims to have secured two iDEX grants from the Indian Army and the Indian Coast Guard, along with several innovation awards for its indigenous deeptech solutions.
Industry experts believe subsea robotics is becoming increasingly important for India’s defence preparedness, marine infrastructure, and disaster management capabilities. As geopolitical and maritime priorities continue to grow, indigenous underwater technologies are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening national capabilities.
According to the company’s leadership, the long-term vision is to establish a globally competitive ocean robotics ecosystem built entirely from India. The startup plans to accelerate research and development, scale manufacturing operations, and deepen partnerships across defence, offshore energy, marine infrastructure, and industrial sectors.
By combining deeptech innovation with practical deployment capabilities, Vikra Ocean Tech is positioning itself as a pioneer in India’s emerging ocean technology sector. Its focus on indigenous innovation could help India become a major contributor to the global underwater robotics industry in the years ahead.
