Backpacking Boom: The Hosteller Raises ₹150 Crore to Redefine Budget Travel in India

Riding the New Age Travel Wave

India’s travel landscape is undergoing a major shift, with young travelers increasingly prioritizing experiences over luxury. Tapping into this growing trend, The Hosteller has emerged as a leading player in the backpacker accommodation segment. The Mumbai-based startup has now raised ₹150 crore in a Series B funding round, marking a significant milestone in its expansion journey.

Strong Investor Confidence

The funding round was led by PROMAFT Partners and V3 Ventures, with participation from ITI Growth Opportunities Fund, Merisis Wealth Trust, and several family offices. This round is reportedly the largest institutional investment raised by a backpacker hostel company in India, highlighting the sector’s growing potential.

Building a Nationwide Hostel Network

Founded in 2014 by Pranav Dangi, The Hosteller has steadily expanded its footprint across the country. The company currently operates over 75 properties in 13 states and has served more than 20 lakh travelers.

With the fresh capital, the startup aims to significantly scale its operations, targeting 25,000 beds nationwide within the next 36 months. This ambitious expansion plan reflects its confidence in the rising demand for affordable, experience-driven travel options.

Beyond Stays: Creating a Travel Ecosystem

The Hosteller is not just focusing on accommodation, it is building a comprehensive travel ecosystem. The company plans to launch a “travel super app” that integrates multiple services, including accommodation, food and beverages, mobility, and curated travel experiences.

This approach aims to provide a seamless and holistic travel experience, allowing users to plan and manage their journeys on a single platform.

Operational Excellence and Rapid Growth

Over the past year, The Hosteller has demonstrated impressive growth, adding more than 30 new properties and increasing its traveler capacity by nearly 70%. Its strong operational performance, including high occupancy rates and repeat customers, has been a key factor in attracting investor interest.

Compared to traditional budget hotels, the hostel chain offers competitive pricing along with a consistent and engaging experience, making it a preferred choice for young travelers.

Capturing the Experience Economy

The rise of experiential travel is reshaping the hospitality industry. Today’s travelers are looking for community-driven stays, social interactions, and unique experiences rather than just a place to sleep.

The Hosteller’s model aligns perfectly with this shift, offering vibrant spaces that encourage interaction and exploration. This positioning gives it a strong competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market.

The Road Ahead

With fresh funding and a clear vision, The Hosteller is well-positioned to lead India’s backpacker hostel segment. Its focus on expansion, technology integration, and customer experience will be critical as it scales operations nationwide.

As India’s travel ecosystem continues to grow, The Hosteller’s journey reflects the broader transformation of the industry, one that is increasingly driven by experiences, community, and innovation.
