Sagar spent a significant part of his career in the luxury hospitality and beverage industry, working with leading names such as ITC, Park and Sofitel. His experience as a sommelier gave him a deep understanding of ingredients, beverages, storytelling and consumer expectations. However, his professional journey eventually took an unexpected turn when he decided to leave the world of luxury hospitality and return to his roots in Uttarakhand.
The decision was deeply personal. A conversation with his mother made him reflect on why people from the hills often had to leave Uttarakhand for better opportunities and services. In 2017, Sagar decided that whatever he built next would contribute to his home state.
Initially, Sagar explored agriculture and tourism. His early experiments included floriculture and medicinal plants, but these experiences also taught him some of the realities of farming. From failed crops to unpredictable conditions, he learned that agriculture requires patience, resilience and a willingness to understand the complete cycle.
His work with farmers eventually introduced him to locally available Himalayan ingredients that had remained largely unexplored. Lemon grass became one of the early discoveries, leading to experiments with essential oils, incense and other products.
The name “Shunya” emerged during a period when Sagar had left his corporate career without a fixed business idea. With everything feeling like a blank slate, “Shunya,” meaning zero, became a natural choice. The name also represented his ambition to take an Indian-origin brand to an international audience.
Over time, Shunya India evolved into a platform focused on creating products from local ingredients while connecting farmers, traditional knowledge, design and modern consumption.
The journey was far from linear. From essential oils and incense to herbal beverages, Sagar and his team continuously experimented, listened to customers and refined their products. During COVID-19, when regular business activities were disrupted, the team produced and distributed around 200 litres of sanitizer every day within their village.
Their beverage journey similarly evolved through customer feedback—from hot herbal infusions to powders, concentrates and eventually more convenient formats.
One of Shunya India’s distinctive concepts is Sixth Element. Inspired by the five elements of nature, the brand considers the consumer the sixth element—the person who completes the product experience.
The philosophy reflects Sagar’s larger approach: products should not simply be manufactured; they should carry a story, connect with their origins and create value for the people involved.
Today, Shunya India continues to build around Himalayan ingredients, farmer partnerships and thoughtful product innovation. With its own manufacturing unit and growing distribution network, the journey represents more than entrepreneurship—it is an effort to demonstrate how local resources can become globally relevant products.
