India’s AI Leap: Sarvam AI Nears $300M Raise to Build a Homegrown Tech Giant

A New Contender in the Global AI Race

India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem is entering a defining phase, and Sarvam AI is emerging as a frontrunner. The Bengaluru-based startup is reportedly close to raising between $300 million and $350 million in a new funding round, potentially valuing the company at over $1.5 billion. This milestone would position Sarvam AI among India’s newest unicorns and signal a major step forward in the country’s ambition to build indigenous AI capabilities.

Strong Investor Interest and Strategic Backing

The funding round is expected to be led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from global tech giants like Nvidia, Amazon, and Prosperity7 Ventures. Such high-profile backing highlights the growing global confidence in India’s AI potential and Sarvam AI’s ability to compete on an international scale.

Building AI for India, in India

Founded in 2023 by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, Sarvam AI is focused on developing large language models tailored specifically for India. Unlike many global AI systems that prioritize English, Sarvam AI’s models are designed to support 22 Indian languages, making them more accessible to a diverse population.

The startup has already developed advanced models with 30 billion and 105 billion parameters, trained domestically to better understand India’s linguistic and cultural nuances. This localized approach is crucial in a country where a significant portion of users interact in regional languages.

Voice-First and Agentic AI Innovation

Sarvam AI is also pushing boundaries with voice-first technology, enabling more natural and intuitive interactions for users. In addition, the company is developing “agentic” AI systems capable of performing complex tasks such as coding, scheduling, and automation with minimal human intervention.

These innovations position the startup not just as a language model provider, but as a comprehensive AI solutions company targeting enterprise adoption across industries.

Aligning with India’s Strategic Vision

The rise of Sarvam AI aligns closely with the government’s push for technological self-reliance. Initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission, backed by significant funding, aim to reduce dependence on foreign AI systems and foster domestic innovation.

Sarvam AI has also benefited from infrastructure support, including access to advanced computing resources like NVIDIA H100 chips through Yotta Data Services, enabling it to scale its research and development efforts.

The Road Ahead

As AI becomes a cornerstone of the global digital economy, Sarvam AI’s growth trajectory reflects India’s broader ambitions in this space. With strong investor backing, cutting-edge technology, and a clear focus on localization, the startup is well-positioned to lead the next wave of AI innovation.

If the funding round closes successfully, Sarvam AI could play a pivotal role in shaping not just India’s AI future, but also its position in the global technology landscape.
