In an era of climate urgency, Biomass Energeons stands as a beacon of sustainable innovation, leveraging agricultural waste to fuel India’s clean energy future. At the heart of this transformation is Mohit Verma, founder of Biomass Energeons, whose mission is not just environmental but also deeply socio-economic, helping India meet its Net Zero Emission goals by 2050 while uplifting rural livelihoods.
In his recent appearance on the Startup Caffe podcast, Mohit Verma addressed the biomass sector’s growing relevance amid India’s energy transition and agricultural waste crisis. “The thick smog around Diwali (October-November) is largely caused by stubble burning,” Verma said. “Instead of burning agricultural waste that creates thick smog, farmers can sell this waste to biomass companies. This eliminates stubble burning while generating income, a win-win for environment and economy.”
With over 50,000 tons of agri-waste processed annually, Biomass Energeons is proof that sustainability can be both scalable and profitable.
India’s 5% biomass blending mandate has created a massive daily demand of 1 lakh tons, but only 5,000–7,000 tons are being supplied—a gap that undercuts both climate policy and air quality. Mohit Verma points to fragmented supply chains and lack of organized agri-waste collection as key roadblocks. “We had to learn machinery operations hands-on. This is a highly unorganized sector,” he noted.
Despite challenges, the economics are compelling: Biomass fuels are 35% cheaper than fossil alternatives, and 2.5 kg of biomass equals the energy output of 1 litre of diesel. These numbers are attracting industries like food processing, steel, and manufacturing to make the switch.
More than just a manufacturer, Biomass Energeons is building a full-stack ecosystem, partnering with farmers, government agencies, and FPOs, and offering consulting to entrepreneurs entering the biomass space. With a production capacity of 250+ tons per day and a ₹50+ crore turnover in just 8 years, the company stands as a model of what’s possible when policy meets purpose.
“Beyond profit, this industry addresses multiple challenges: reducing carbon emissions, controlling climate change, providing additional farmer income, rural upliftment, and creating a cleaner environment for future generations,” said Verma.
As the government plans to raise the biomass mandate to 7%, Biomass Energeons is scaling up operations to meet demand while staying rooted in its mission: making clean energy accessible, affordable, and impactful.
