Empowering Rural India with AI: How Nidhi Bhasin Is Transforming Farming Through Technology

Bridging the Rural Knowledge Gap

In India’s vast agricultural landscape, access to timely and reliable information remains a major challenge—especially for smallholder farmers. Digital Green India, under the leadership of Nidhi Bhasin, is working to close this gap using technology-driven solutions. With over two decades of experience in social development and tech-led initiatives, Bhasin is now steering the organisation toward a future where artificial intelligence and grassroots systems work hand in hand.

AI-Powered Solutions for Farmers

One of the standout innovations from Digital Green India is FarmerChat, an AI-powered multilingual advisory platform. Designed to deliver real-time, localised guidance, the tool helps farmers make informed decisions related to agriculture, climate practices, and livelihoods.

By combining conversational AI with on-ground networks, the platform ensures that critical information reaches farmers when they need it most. This approach addresses a key issue in rural India—not just access to information, but access at the right time and in the right format.

Tackling Barriers to Adoption

Despite the rapid growth of agritech platforms in India, adoption among smallholder farmers remains uneven. According to Bhasin, the challenge lies in a combination of factors, access, trust, literacy, and timing.

While smartphone penetration has improved, many farmers still rely on shared devices. The issue is even more pronounced among women, where ownership of smartphones remains significantly lower. Trust also plays a crucial role; farmers are more likely to adopt digital tools only when the information provided is consistently accurate and reliable.

Empowering Women Farmers

A major focus of Digital Green India’s work is empowering women in agriculture. Although women play a central role in farming activities, they are often not recognised as decision-makers. This limits their access to tools, information, and financial support.

Through its initiatives, the organisation has reached over 5.5 million farmers across 9+ states, with nearly 50% being women. By providing women with direct access to advisory platforms, Digital Green India is helping them gain confidence, make independent decisions, and actively participate in farm management.

Building Inclusive Digital Ecosystems

Bhasin emphasizes that technology alone is not enough, it must be designed with inclusivity in mind. Digital platforms need to account for structural challenges such as land ownership gaps and limited digital literacy among women.

Encouragingly, efforts are underway to build better digital infrastructure, including farmer registries and data systems. These developments can enable more targeted and inclusive services in the future. When combined with user-centric design, such systems have the potential to transform rural economies.

The Road Ahead for Agritech

The future of farming, as envisioned by Nidhi Bhasin, lies at the intersection of climate resilience, gender inclusion, and grassroots innovation. By integrating AI with community-led approaches, Digital Green India is setting a powerful example of how technology can drive meaningful social impact.
