India’s aviation sector is on the brink of a new revolution, with urban air mobility gaining momentum. In a significant development, IndiGo has invested ₹10 crore in Sarla Aviation, marking its entry into the emerging air-taxi segment. This move signals growing confidence in next-generation transportation solutions that promise faster, cleaner, and more efficient urban travel.
The investment was made through IndiGo’s venture arm, highlighting its intent to diversify beyond traditional airline operations. This marks the airline’s second attempt to tap into the air-taxi space after an earlier partnership with Archer Aviation did not materialize due to delays.
By backing a homegrown startup, IndiGo is now aligning itself with India’s push toward indigenous innovation in advanced mobility solutions.
Founded in 2023 by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, Sarla Aviation is focused on developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
Its flagship project, Shunya, is designed to function as an air taxi capable of short-distance urban travel. These aircraft aim to reduce congestion on roads while offering a sustainable alternative to traditional transportation methods.
With this latest investment, Sarla Aviation plans to utilize the funds for operational needs, capital expenditure, and business expansion. The startup has already raised around $13.4 million to date, including a significant Series A1 round led by Accel and investor Nikhil Kamath.
The company is currently in the development and testing phase, with plans to launch its air taxi services in Bengaluru by 2028. If successful, it could mark a major milestone in India’s transportation landscape.
Air taxis, powered by electric propulsion systems, represent a transformative shift in urban mobility. They are designed to operate with lower emissions, reduced noise, and minimal infrastructure compared to traditional aircraft.
For densely populated cities like Bengaluru, where traffic congestion is a persistent challenge, such solutions could significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity.
While the potential is immense, the path to commercialization is not without challenges. Regulatory approvals, infrastructure development, and public acceptance will play crucial roles in determining the success of air taxis in India.
However, with strong backing from established players like IndiGo, startups like Sarla Aviation are better positioned to navigate these challenges and bring their vision to life.
IndiGo’s investment in Sarla Aviation reflects a broader trend of traditional companies embracing futuristic technologies. As the race to build urban air mobility solutions intensifies, collaborations between established industry leaders and innovative startups will be key.
If executed successfully, this partnership could pave the way for a new era of transportation in India, one where the skies become an extension of urban mobility.
