From Intern to Cofounder: How a Teen Built His Startup Career Instead of a College Degree

In a world where college is often seen as the only path to success, Raghav Saraf chose a different route, one that led him straight into the heart of the startup ecosystem. What began as a short internship turned into a life-changing journey, making him a cofounder of the fast-growing AI startup Zamp within just a few years.

The Beginning: A Hackathon Connection

Raghav’s journey started right after finishing high school in 2022. During a blockchain hackathon, he built a payment gateway that caught the attention of Amit Jain, a former managing director at Sequoia India and ex-head of Asia Pacific at Uber.

Their shared interest in building financial technology solutions led to a connection. Initially, Raghav planned to pursue undergraduate studies in the US. However, he decided to take a leap of faith and joined Zamp as a three-month intern to explore the opportunity.

Choosing Experience Over Education

What was meant to be a temporary internship quickly turned into something bigger. Working in a small team of 5–10 people, Raghav was exposed to real-world challenges, taking ownership of key projects early on.

By the end of the internship, he realized he was learning at a much faster pace than he would in a traditional classroom. This led to a bold decision skipping college altogether to continue working at Zamp full-time.

Convincing his parents wasn’t easy, but his belief in hands-on learning and startup exposure eventually won them over.

Rising Through the Ranks

Over the next few years, Zamp scaled rapidly, growing to a team of around 80 employees and building a global customer base, including major banks.

Raghav, now 21, gradually took on more responsibility, leading product development and playing a crucial role in shaping the company’s direction. His growth didn’t go unnoticed.

In 2025, he was officially named cofounder, a decision that reflected not just his contributions, but his leadership, maturity, and long-term vision.

A Partnership Built on Trust

The dynamic between Raghav and Amit Jain is rooted in mutual respect and collaboration. Rather than a traditional boss-employee relationship, they operate as peers, complementing each other’s strengths.

Raghav emphasizes continuous learning, teaching himself everything from product building to leadership by identifying gaps and actively working on them. This mindset has been key to his rapid growth.

Redefining Success for the Next Generation

Raghav Saraf’s journey challenges the conventional belief that success must follow a predefined academic path. Instead, it highlights the power of practical experience, self-learning, and taking calculated risks.

At a time when many graduates feel unprepared for real-world challenges, his story offers a fresh perspective, sometimes, the best classroom is the real world itself.

Why This Story Matters

In today’s fast-evolving startup ecosystem, adaptability and execution matter more than ever. Raghav’s journey proves that with the right mindset and opportunities, age and degrees are not barriers to success.
