Medtech startup Bioscan Research has raised $1 million in a seed funding round led by Unicorn India Ventures, as it looks to scale its technology for the early detection of traumatic brain injuries. The company plans to use the fresh capital to expand its market presence, secure additional regulatory approvals, upgrade its products and develop new intellectual property.
Founded in 2017 by Anupam Lavania and Shilpa Malik, Bioscan Research combines optics, electronics, mechanics and software to develop healthcare technologies focused on trauma care.
Its flagship product, CEREBO, is a machine-learning-powered near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device designed to help identify intracranial injuries in trauma patients. The technology aims to support doctors in detecting potential brain injuries even when patients do not show obvious or visible symptoms.
Traumatic brain injury remains a significant global healthcare challenge, with millions of people affected every year. Mild traumatic brain injuries can often go unidentified because their symptoms may not be immediately apparent.
Bioscan Research is attempting to address this gap by providing doctors with an objective, non-invasive assessment tool that can support earlier clinical decision-making.
The company believes that technologies capable of detecting intracranial haemorrhage without invasive procedures could play an important role in improving emergency and trauma care.
The newly raised capital will be used to upgrade CEREBO and strengthen its technological capabilities. Bioscan Research also plans to pursue additional regulatory approvals, allowing the company to expand the reach of its technology across more healthcare markets.
Alongside product development, the startup intends to invest in new intellectual property as it builds its technology portfolio.
The company’s founders said the funding would help address limitations associated with traditional diagnostic tools while enabling faster access to critical information for doctors managing trauma patients.
Unicorn India Ventures Managing Partner Anil Joshi highlighted the growing need for innovative healthcare technologies capable of addressing gaps in diagnosis and treatment.
According to the investor, Bioscan Research has made notable progress over the past year, including upgrades to its technology solutions. The firm sees significant potential in the medtech market, particularly in technologies that can enable earlier identification of brain trauma.
Bioscan Research is targeting aggressive growth over the next 12 months. The startup aims to grow threefold while expanding its presence across India and entering international markets.
With fresh funding, regulatory expansion and continued product development, Bioscan Research is positioning CEREBO as a technology that could strengthen early assessment of brain injuries in emergency and trauma-care settings.
